Giving is generative in deep and lasting ways.  Generativity has been extensively studied in the social sciences and is a hallmark of well-being.  The great, if cliched, truism behind generativity is: "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime."  When we nurture others so that their lives develop in unexpected and beautiful ways, we are passing on the torch of love.
